Joseph (Jose) Gomez, 38 year old widower and father of two kids, confessed to fatally stabbing Miss Benancia Savedra, 38. Miss Savedra died a short time after being stabbed through the abdomen as she returned to her home at 4326 Roberta Street, Los Angeles after attending church with a friend Miss Concha Aparicio, 18.
According to the asserted confession, Gomez armed himself with a butcher knife and waited in the shadows near Miss Savedra's home for the woman to return from church. Miss Aparicio, according to police reports, stood helplessly by as Gomez slashed at her friend.
The killing was committed on the front steps of the victim's home. Gomez, Miss Aparicio said, jumped out from under the front steps, threw his arms around Benancia and stabbed and slashed her with a big butcher knife. So furious was his assault that the woman's body was nearly sliced in two. She died instantly. Gomez, arrested at the home of relatives at 4625 Fisher Street, explained that he saw Miss Savedra in the company of another man earlier in the evening. He said he "met her several months ago and fell in love with her. I asked her to marry me and she said she'd let me know. Then I got a note from her saying she could not marry me because she did not love me.I saw her yesterday with another man."
The 182 lb woman fought the much smaller but jealously insane suitor, for her hands were badly cut in defensive wounds. "If I can't have you nobody else will" Gomez told her as he killed her. He was high on marijuana when he committed the crime.
Jealousy was the motive for the slaying, according to Detective Leiutenant Eddie Romero and Ralph Dominquez of the homicide squad.
Gomez received life imprisonment.
